Hello Brooklyn. Nice to meet you.

March 7, 2008 · 6 Comments

Before moving to the city, I’d made 8 trips for business, school, whatever. Since most of my great aunts and uncles lived in Manhattan, I never saw any of the other boroughs.

Today an interview required me to go to Brooklyn for the first time. I took the subway, arrived faster than expected, and was pleasantly surprised! It’s normal…and kind of fun! I thought the subway would go outdoors and I could view the bridge, but that didn’t happen. Maybe in the summer I’ll walk across it.

How fun! We’ll have to go to Brighton Beach / Coney Island sometime! It’s all the way out there — and on an above-ground train — very fun and good views! Can’t wait to hear about your interview!

Hey! I didn’t even know you could get to the beach by the train! We should definitely go in the summer!

A few comments from a recent (4 years) New York transplant:

    * Brooklyn Bridge is more fun to walk from Brooklyn to Manhattan (better views) - take the subway one stop in to High St. (A, C) or Clark St. (2, 3)
    * Keep your eye out on the Brooklyn Botanic Garden - besides free admission Saturday mornings, they also have Cherry Blossom Festival festivities in the spring
    * the boardwalk connecting Brighton Beach / Coney Island is wonderful to walk - especially if you keep your ears open to accents in conversations. It’s actually quieter and more beautiful in the winter since there are less people.
    * The Mermaid Parade at Coney Island - you’ve got to experience it once
    * try Grimaldi’s Pizza in DUMBO and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory right beside it
    * try the Atlantic Chip Shop - they’ve got fried everything - fish, chips, chocolate bars, macaroni and cheese, pizza

Oh wow, this is such a cool list! Thanks so much for all the suggestions!

Yes! Brooklyn is indeed totally awesome (I live here, can you tell… haha)

You should also check out the Brooklyn Museum, which is right next to the Botanic Garden - I second Dust Puppy OI’s suggestion on that one as well as Grimaldi’s and the Brooklyn Ice Cream factory - both delicious!

Definitely check out Cobble Hill (my neighborhood) and Park Slope for lots of little boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Both nice places for wandering around.

You should also check out Empire State Park in DUMBO - they show films there every Thursday night in the summer.
