“I think every writer goes through this period of agony.”

-Anne Midgette, during intermission at the New York Philharmonic.

These days, my life has been devoted completely to my craft. Not only have the deadlines been frequent, but the writing has also been in excess. Not just e-mails, nor cover letters, but essays, academic papers and late night sessions saving short little nothings of ideas for later.

On Oct. 25 and 26 the Mobile Operaopens their production of “La Traviata.” I got a little taste of it this afternoon, Dione brought home a DVD recording of the Pensacola Opera version so she could learn the dancers choreography.

The Pensacola Opera and the Mobile Opera share a conductor, Mr. Jerome Shannon. I’m not sure how similar the productions will be, but the short bit I did see made me excited enough to count the days until it opens.

A few years ago, I went to an open rehearsal of Puccini’s “Turandot.” It was my millionth time seeing it in rehearsal, but I was so in love with it that I saw it about 7 times in one week. There was a man in the balcony, all by himself, drinking champagne and eating goodies out of a lunch box he’d brought with him. He had his feet kicked over the seats in front of him, and appeared so beautifully peaceful. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to copy him and have a solitary picnic at the rehearsal for “La Traviata” but I’m tempted.
