After a meeting with my academic adviser on Thursday and finalizing my plans for graduation, I can now say with great confidence: I am moving to New York in December.I’m picking a date soon, buying cardboard boxes in November, and doing the job search as I speak. I’m less surprised about it than other people, but only because I have spent years anticipating it. I meet the finality with both happiness and sadness (and fear).

Last years September Artwalk seemed to be the biggest that year. I would predict that the preceeding awards ceremony brought the large crowds, and I have a feeling that this years event will be no exception.
If you can find me, I’ll be in the crowds with my handy DSLR camera shooting for the blog and for myself. The event takes place on September 14th around 6 p.m. in the Cathedral Square arts district in downtown Mobile. And if you’re wondering, “What’s an artwalk?” and have always wanted to go, the September one is a good first one to attend. Basically all the galleries downtown open their newest exhibits with refreshmens. Last year, they closed Dauphin Street at Claiborne, and had a live jazz band play. Unique to this artwalk, is the Mobile Arts Council arts award ceremony, where the winners will receieve a work of art and give speeches.
A friend involved with the Mobile Arts scene, told me that some of the galleries wanted to put up video cameras outside, with a large TV screen in the gallery so that patrons could watch people coming in. I think that’s a very cool idea, and even better, the galleries participating in the art walks should consider having web cams. Then people could log online and watch the party from their living room, or even have a camera in one gallery feeding live video from another gallery.
In addition, I think all the Mobile Arts organizations should embrace how techonology has allowed easy video editing and capturing. It costs virtually nothing but a few hours of time to edit a webisode of a rehearsal, lecture, or performance clip.
